Pedro Vilarroig

Concerto for piano and orchestra

Orquesta Sinfónica de Praga / Mario Klemens, dirección / Luis Fernando Pérez, piano / Cuarteto Alexeeva / Joaquín Franco, saxofón / Jesús María Gómez, piano

Categories: Contemporary and Spanish
Period: 21st Century

Overview

Composer of an extensive electronic, chamber, solo piano and choral output, Pedro Vilarroig (Madrid, 1954) has always revealed a preference for orchestral music, having composed nine symphonies along with three solo concertos, including the brilliant Concerto for piano and orchestra (1990) recorded here, a monumental work of notable neo-romantic reminiscences. Vilarroig’s work clearly leans toward tonality and modality, with a variety of influences, mainly Central European, from the great classic masters like Mahler, Shostakovich or Sibelius to film music, serialism or jazz, and taking in certain traits proper to oriental music as seen in the two other works in this recording: the First String Quartet premiered in 2001, and the Sonata for alto saxophone and piano in three movements, a fourth added later at the suggestion of the saxophonist Joaquín Franco and composed in 2004 for a concert at the Senior School of Mining Engineers in Madrid.
